| The Aesthetic and Cultural Practices . The aesthetic and cultural practice that relate to my work were derived from my interest in Eastern philosophy. Until recently, I had concentrated on its soft meditative expression of compassion, serenity and spirituality. Induced to meditate, the viewer was confronted to analyze and think about the complicated surroundings through very simple everyday images. These images were presented in clear, ordered arrangements. My current works illustrate the formation of dual existence of random and imposed order through the use of spontaneity and chance. Along with philosophical overtones, it is important that these arrangements create visual pleasure and entertain the eye, retaining the traditional values of "beautiful things to look at". My birthplace, Japan provided me with my passionate natural appreciation and understanding for its aesthetics. This is demonstrated in my artwork. By receiving my art education in Canada , the execution of my artwork brought together a special blend of these two cultures. Akira Yoshikawa |
